What are MP3 tags?

MP3 tags (ID3) are the hidden details inside a music file — title, artist, album, cover art, genre and lyrics. Music players like Apple Music, Spotify local files and car stereos read them to display your library correctly.

Wrong or missing tags are why songs show up as “Unknown artist”. Fixing them takes seconds here, and because only the tag data changes, your audio quality stays exactly the same.

An MP3 stores its tags in a small block of data, usually at the start of the file, separate from the audio. Editing MP3 tags therefore never touches the sound: you can rename a song, fix a typo in the album name, add the year and track number or embed a new cover in seconds. Clean tags also make your library easier to search, keep albums in order and help DJ software and car stereos show the right details. This editor reads the existing tags first, so you only need to change what is wrong.

Which MP3 tags can you edit?

FieldWhat it is for
Title, Artist, AlbumHow the song appears in every music app
Album artistKeeps compilations and features grouped under one album
Year, Track, GenreSorting, track order (for example “3 / 11”) and smart playlists
ComposerCredits for classical music and songwriting
LyricsUnsynchronised lyrics shown by players that support them
Cover artThe front cover image, from a JPG or PNG

The editor opens one MP3 at a time, up to 200 MB, and reads existing ID3v1, ID3v2.3 and ID3v2.4 tags so you only change what is wrong.

Common MP3 tag problems and fixes

  • Song shows as “Unknown artist” — the Artist field is empty or only stored in an old ID3v1 tag. Fill it in and save.
  • An album is split into several albums — the Album or Album artist text differs slightly between tracks. Make them identical on every file.
  • Tracks play in the wrong order — add track numbers such as “1 / 12”.
  • No cover art in the car or on the phone — embed a square JPG of 500×500 px or more; some car stereos ignore very large images, so 1000×1000 px is a safe maximum.
  • Changes do not show up — apps such as Apple Music cache tags. Remove the song from the library and add the new file again.

Why edit ID3 tags in your browser?

Desktop taggers like Mp3tag or Kid3 are great for big libraries, but you have to install them. This online MP3 tag editor works on any computer, Chromebook, iPhone or Android phone without an install, and the file never leaves your device. Only the tag block is rewritten — the audio frames are copied byte for byte — so there is no re-encoding and no quality loss.

Artist vs album artist and other tagging rules

Music apps group songs using a few fields, so small differences matter:

  • Artist is who performs this track, including features (“Artist A feat. Artist B”).
  • Album artist is who the whole album belongs to. Set it to the same value on every track — or “Various Artists” for compilations — and the album stays together.
  • Album must be spelled exactly the same on every track, including capitals and punctuation.
  • Track works best as “number / total”, such as “4 / 12”.
  • Genre is free text; keep it short and consistent so smart playlists work.

Once the tags are right, the same title, artist and cover appear in the Audio Visualizer automatically when you turn the song into a video.

Where MP3 tags show up

The details you set in this MP3 tag editor travel with the file, so they appear almost everywhere you play it:

  • Music apps: Apple Music, Windows Media Player, VLC, foobar2000, MusicBee and Spotify local files.
  • Phones: the built-in music players on iPhone and Android, plus apps like Poweramp.
  • Cars and devices: USB and Bluetooth car stereos, smart speakers and old-school MP3 players.
  • DJ software: Rekordbox, Serato and Traktor read title, artist, genre and artwork to keep crates organised.

Because the MP3 tag editor saves ID3v2.3 — the most widely supported tag version — the same file looks right on all of them.

FAQ

MP3 Tag Editor FAQ

Is the MP3 Tag Editor free?

Yes. Edit as many MP3s as you like without an account. The file is read and saved in your browser, so your music is never uploaded.

Does editing tags reduce audio quality?

No. Only the ID3 tag at the start of the file is rewritten. The audio frames are copied byte for byte, so the sound is identical to the original.

Which ID3 versions are supported?

The editor reads ID3v1, ID3v2.3 and ID3v2.4 tags and saves an ID3v2.3 tag, the version most widely supported by music players and car stereos. Fields the editor does not show, such as comments, are not carried over.

Can I add album art to an MP3?

Yes. Click “Change cover” and choose a square JPG or PNG, ideally 500×500 px or larger. It is embedded as the front cover, which is what music apps display.

What is the difference between Artist and Album artist?

Artist is who performs the track; Album artist is who the album belongs to. Music apps group albums by Album artist, so set it the same on every track to stop an album from splitting.

How do I add lyrics to an MP3?

Paste the lyrics into the Lyrics box and save. They are stored as unsynchronised lyrics, which players such as foobar2000, MusicBee and many Android apps can display.

Can I edit several MP3 files at once?

The editor works on one MP3 at a time. Each file opens and saves in a few seconds, so small albums are quick to fix.

Can I edit tags of FLAC, M4A or WAV files?

Not yet — this editor writes ID3 tags, which are an MP3 format. FLAC and M4A use different tag systems.

Can I remove all tags from an MP3?

Yes. Click “Remove all tags” to empty every field and the cover, then save. The download keeps the audio and drops the old tag details.

Does the MP3 tag editor work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Open it in Safari or Chrome, choose an MP3 from your files, edit the tags and download the updated file — no app required.
