How does MP3 to MIDI work?
An MP3 stores sound; a MIDI file stores notes. To convert between them, a neural network listens for pitches and their timing, then writes each one as a MIDI note with a start, length and velocity.
It works best on a single instrument or vocal melody. Dense full mixes contain many overlapping sounds, so expect to clean up the result in your DAW.
This converter uses Basic Pitch, an open-source note-detection model from Spotify, running entirely in your browser. You choose the source type — piano, guitar, vocal melody or bass — and adjust two simple controls to balance missing notes against extra ones. The piano roll preview shows exactly which notes will be written before you download the MIDI file.
Which audio converts well to MIDI?
| Source | Result | Choose source type |
|---|---|---|
| Solo piano | Very good — chords and melodies | Piano |
| Acoustic or clean electric guitar | Good — riffs and simple chords | Guitar |
| A cappella or isolated vocal | Good — one melody line | Vocal melody |
| Bass line or bass stem | Good — low single notes | Bass |
| Full mix with drums | Rough — many extra notes | Piano, then clean up |
The source type tells the detector which pitch range to look in and whether to expect one note at a time. Vocal and bass are monophonic, so only the strongest note at each moment is kept.
Tips for a cleaner audio to MIDI conversion
- Use a single instrument. If you only have a full song, split out the part you want with a stem separator first.
- Adjust note sensitivity. Lower it if you see lots of tiny ghost notes; raise it if quiet notes are missing.
- Raise the minimum note length to drop short blips from breaths, fret noise or reverb tails.
- Trim to the part you need. The converter reads the first 3 minutes of a file, and short clips convert faster.
- Quantize in your DAW. Notes keep their real timing, and the file is written at 120 BPM, so set your project tempo and quantize if you want a grid-perfect result.
What you can do with the MIDI file
A MIDI file holds notes instead of sound, so you can change everything about the performance afterwards:
- Play the melody with any virtual instrument — synth, strings, piano or 8-bit.
- Fix wrong notes, change the key or rewrite the rhythm in a piano roll.
- Turn it into sheet music in MuseScore or another notation app.
- Learn a song by following the notes in Synthesia-style piano apps.

How to use the MIDI file in FL Studio, Ableton or Logic
- Set your project tempo first. The MIDI file is written at 120 BPM but keeps the real timing of every note, so it lines up with the original audio when both start at the same point.
- Drag the .mid file onto an instrument track. FL Studio opens it in the piano roll, Ableton Live creates a MIDI clip, and Logic Pro and GarageBand add a software instrument region.
- Delete stray notes. Very short or very quiet notes are usually detection noise; select them by velocity or length and remove them.
- Quantize gently. A 1/16 grid at 50–70% strength tightens timing without making it robotic.
- Choose a sound. The file suggests a General MIDI instrument (piano, guitar, voice or bass), but you can load any synth or sampler.
MP3 to MIDI vs WAV to MIDI: does the format matter?
Any common audio format works: MP3, WAV, FLAC and M4A all convert to MIDI the same way, because the file is decoded to plain audio before the notes are detected. What matters is the sound inside the file, not its extension.
- WAV or FLAC keep every detail, which helps with quiet notes and fast passages.
- MP3 at 192–320 kbps converts almost as well; very low-bitrate MP3s can add false notes in the high range.
- Phone recordings work if the instrument is close to the microphone and the room is quiet.
So whether you search for MP3 to MIDI, WAV to MIDI or audio to MIDI, this is the same converter — just pick the right source type for your recording.

MP3 to MIDI FAQ
Is the MP3 to MIDI converter free?
Yes. Convert audio to MIDI with no signup, no credits and no watermark. The note detector runs on your own device, so there is no upload queue either.
Can it convert a full song with drums and vocals?
It will produce a MIDI file, but drums and overlapping instruments create many extra notes. For clean results, use a solo instrument, an isolated vocal or a stem exported from your DAW.
Which DAWs can open the MIDI file?
Any of them. The download is a standard .mid file that opens in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, GarageBand, Cubase, Reaper, MuseScore and most notation apps.
Is my audio uploaded to a server?
No. The note-detection model is downloaded once and runs inside your browser. Your audio never leaves your device.
What do Note sensitivity and Min note length do?
Higher sensitivity keeps more possible notes, including quiet ones; lower sensitivity filters out weak detections and ghost notes. Min note length drops anything shorter than the value you set.
Why are only the first 3 minutes converted?
The neural network runs on your device and needs memory for every second of audio. Three minutes keeps conversion fast and reliable, even on laptops and phones. Trim longer files to the part you need.
Why is the MIDI file at 120 BPM?
Audio has no tempo marker, so the file uses the standard 120 BPM while every note keeps its real position in seconds. Set your DAW to the song’s tempo and quantize if you need notes on the grid.
Can it convert drums to MIDI?
No. The detector listens for pitched notes, so drums and percussion are not transcribed as drum hits. It works best on piano, guitar, vocals and bass.
Can I convert a YouTube video to MIDI?
Not directly — the converter needs an audio file on your device. Use a recording you own or have permission to use, then drop the MP3 or WAV here.
How long does the conversion take?
Usually a few seconds for a short clip and under a minute for a 3-minute file on a recent computer. The first run also downloads the note-detection model once.
